Highlights of  the year at Braeside SAMM

• Second Place in the RASV The Weekly Times Carcass Competition for a consignment of 224 SAMM cross lambs yielding 57% on Viascan
• First Place in the  March Shorn Pair of Rams under 1 1/2 yrs and
• Second Place for Individual March shorn Ram under 1 1/2 years at Bendigo Sheep & Wool Show.
• Recently we  visited leading studs in Western Australia in an effort to source the best available genetics.

While the mulesing debate continues at Braeside we are conscious of consumer needs and our selection and breeding program is  achieving a barer breech. Even though SAMMs have always had a  bare breech the selection for it is evident in this years rams for sale.

The price of lambs and CFA ewes this season has been extremely good. Potential breeding ewes have found their way to the sale yards instead of being available for the Spring Store Sales.  SAMMs offer the opportunity to breed your own quality replacement  ewes.  SAMM rams  have been successfully crossed with Border Leister Merino ewes, Merino ewes, Bond, Corriedale, Dohne  and even Dorper ewes.  Thus  providing a cost effective option to purchasing  expensive ewes.  Some producers have simply joined SAMM s over there current flock and continued to upgrade. One of our clients has stated that “if it wasn’t for SAMMs he wouldn’t have sheep.”
